What is the correct direction for placing the deceased's head (east or west) when praying over them, and does this differ between men and women?

First: The Sunnah is for the Imam to stand at the head of a male deceased and at the middle of a female deceased during the funeral prayer.

Second: There is no objection to placing the head of the deceased to the right or left of the Imam during the funeral prayer, as there is no evidence that mandates specifying one of the two directions. There is no difference in this regard between a man and a woman. The jurists have stated that the matter is broad in this regard, and that there is no basis for the belief held by some that the head of the deceased must be to the Imam's right.
