What is the Islamic ruling regarding the direction of graves?

The direction of graves should be towards the Qibla, and the deceased should be placed on their right side, with their face towards the Qibla, just as they are directed during the throes of death. This is based on what Abu Dawud, Al-Hakim, and others narrated, that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The Sacred House is your Qibla, both alive and dead."
