ما حكم الشعر في الإسلام؟

Poetry is speech; its good is good, and its bad is bad. Its value lies in its content. The Companions and scholars permitted it, and there is a need for it to understand the language, to cite it in Tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis), to know the meanings of the Qur'an and Sunnah, and to deduce from it lineage, history, and the days of the Arabs. The Companions recited poetry in the presence of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and the Prophet commanded Hassan to recite poetry. The dispraise of poets in the Qur'an or poetry in the Sunnah is only for those who are excessive and lie. Allah made an exception for "except those who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allah much and defend themselves after they were wronged." The dispraise of memorizing poetry in the Sunnah refers to what distracts one from the Qur'an and Sunnah and understanding the religion, or what involves tashbeeb (erotic poetry) about women and the like.
