How does a servant repent of his sin, and what are the signs of Allah's acceptance of his repentance?

Allah has legislated repentance for His servants and urged them to it, promising the repentant mercy and forgiveness. The Quran and Sunnah have indicated the obligation of repentance and the need to hasten to it. A person is not truly repentant unless their repentance fulfills five conditions: sincerity, abstaining from the sin, regretting having committed it, resolving not to return to it, and that the repentance occurs before the death rattle. If the sin involves a right of other people, then one must clear oneself of this right. The state of the repentant person should be between hoping for acceptance and fearing punishment. There may be signs of the servant's sincere repentance, such as a burning feeling in their heart for what they have neglected, viewing themselves with a sense of shortcoming, avoiding the sin and its causes, turning to their Lord, accompanying people of virtue, and seeing repentance as a blessing.
