Is Zakat obligatory on Social Security funds?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Insurance in all its forms is unlawful (haram), except for cooperative insurance. Cooperative insurance is not subject to zakat because its funds are charitable endowments. As for non-cooperative insurance, it must be canceled, and its profits must be disposed of by spending them on the welfare of Muslims. If a person receives from it an amount equal to what he paid, he must pay zakat on it if it reaches the nisab and a year has passed.
