Is it permissible to receive a pension from the governmental Social Security Corporation, given that monthly deductions are obligatory and the corporation's investments are not necessarily Shariah-compliant? And is Zakat due on the amount paid to Social Security throughout the years of service?
If the insurance adheres to Sharia-compliant regulations, then it is permissible to subscribe to it and receive a salary from it. If it does not adhere, then it is not permissible to subscribe to it. If a person is compelled to join it, then it is not permissible for him to benefit from it except to the extent of what is permissible (halal) within it. The permissible portion consists of what is deducted monthly from the employee's salary and what his company grants him, in addition to the profits from investing these funds in Sharia-permissible matters. As for Zakat, if a year (hawl) has not passed on this money, then no Zakat is due on it. If a year has passed on it, then the ruling on the obligation of Zakat on it is similar to the ruling on Zakat for usurped or stolen money, regarding which there are two narrations: The first is that no Zakat is due on it, and the second is that its Zakat is obligatory.
