What is the ruling on a father who deprives his children of freedom? Please advise me with counsel.

Determining whether a father's prevention of "freedom" for his children is correct depends on what is meant by freedom. If what is meant by it is following whims in forbidden desires, then what the father did is indeed good, and he will be rewarded, for he has preserved his trust and is a guardian and responsible for his flock.

However, if what is meant is depriving the children of their legitimate rights, then this is a dereliction of duty and a responsibility before Allah. These rights include good upbringing, spending justly on males and females, and providing appropriate food, clothing, and housing.

A father must fear Allah concerning his children and not neglect those he supports. It is encouraged to consult children on major matters that affect their future lives, such as marriage, for a father does not have the right to force his children to marry someone they do not desire. Nevertheless, the shortcomings of parents do not justify filial disobedience.
