What is the legal ruling concerning the prayer and fasting of a wife who uses a contraceptive injection that has led to a disruption in her menstrual cycle, causing her to have six days of purity and six days of menstruation, after the specified period of the injection's effectiveness has passed?
If a woman experiences continuous bleeding such that it stops for six days and then returns, she is considered to be suffering from istiḥāḍah (non-menstrual vaginal bleeding). She must differentiate between menstrual blood (ḥayḍ) and istiḥāḍah blood if she is able to discern, meaning that menstrual blood should be strong and have distinct characteristics. Its duration must not be less than one day and one night, nor exceed fifteen days, including any intervening periods of purity. The period of purity between two menstruations must not be less than fifteen days.
If the conditions for discernment are not met, for example, if the duration is less than one day and one night or more than fifteen days, then she is not considered to be discerning. In this case, she reverts to her habitual period if she has a known habit. If she is neither discerning nor has a habit, then her menstruation is six or seven days. If all the blood has the same characteristic, or if blood with the same characteristic as menstrual blood recurs after a period of purity, then she is not considered to be discerning.
