What is the Shar'i ruling regarding a husband who refrains from spending on his wife, abuses her verbally and physically, forbids her from praying and fasting, abandons her, and slanders her honor, knowing that the wife fully fulfills his rights and the husband does not accept advice?

It is the wife's right to be maintained by her husband, according to what is customary. If he withholds it, she may take from his money what suffices her need without his knowledge. Otherwise, she may refer the matter to a judge to compel him to provide maintenance or divorce. It is also obligatory for the wife to obey her husband in intimacy unless she has an excuse. Some jurists have stated that if the wife agrees to remain with her husband who does not provide for her, then she has the right to refuse him conjugal rights. If the father prevents the mother from praying, then he is not to be obeyed in that. As for voluntary fasting, he may prevent her from it if he needs her. If the father mistreats the mother, the children should advise him gently and courteously, and they must show filial piety to their parents regardless of their misconduct.
