Interpreters differed concerning the type of food included on the table (Al-Ma'idah), with most opinions suggesting it was fish and loaves of bread. The majority of scholars hold that the table descended in response to the supplication of Jesus (peace be upon him), citing Allah's saying: "Allah said, 'Indeed, I will send it down to you. But whoever disbelieves among you after that, I will surely punish him with a punishment such as I have not punished anyone among the worlds.'" (Quran 5:115). Whereas some of the Tabi'un (followers) held that it did not descend, and that the disciples said: "We have no need for it." Imam Ibn Kathir and others favored the opinion that it did descend, based on Allah's saying: "Indeed, I will send it down to you," and Allah's promise and warning are true and truthful.
