How can a friend who has repented from fornication and theft, but does not know the amount he stole, and does not possess the money to return it, and cannot seek absolution for fear of imprisonment, complete his repentance while he desires to obey Allah?
The repentance of a servant is not complete unless rights are restored to their owners or their forgiveness is sought; otherwise, their repentance is incomplete. This person must return whatever rights of others are in their possession. As for what they are unable to return, they must inform the owners of these rights that it is a debt upon them, and they will return it when they are able. The fear of worldly punishment should not prevent them from doing so, because the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe. They must also strive to seek forgiveness and perform good deeds that expiate sins.
