Must a son swear by the Qur’an to appease his mother, knowing that he cannot fulfill the oath concerning a matter that does not involve disobedience? Is it permissible for him to swear and then expiate his oath? And is it permissible for a menstruating woman to swear an oath?

The aforementioned matter is divided into three parts: 1. If the action is obligatory: Swear an oath to please the mother, then offer an expiation for the oath. 2. If the action is forbidden: Stay away from it, and the oath confirms that. Committing it entails sin and an expiation for the oath. 3. If the action is permissible: Swear an oath not to do it and strive to abandon it out of filial piety to the mother. If the action occurs, then an expiation for the oath is due.

As for a woman swearing an oath while menstruating, there is no sin in it, and expiation is binding upon her if she breaks it, unless it necessitates touching the Mus'haf. It is better not to resort to oaths except for a benefit, based on the Almighty's saying: ﴿And do not make [your oath by] Allah an obstacle against your doing good.﴾
