A husband must provide for his wife in a manner commensurate with his means, and it is not a condition that she be wealthy. Maintenance includes what the wife needs of clothing, food, drink, and housing, and its value varies according to time and place. Withholding maintenance while being able to provide it is forbidden and considered a grave sin. A wife is not obligated to help her husband with maintenance, but if she does so, it is out of good companionship and is considered among the best forms of charity.
