Is a man described as having good religion and character, but who has been divorced twice due to his overbearing mother whom he does not disobey, considered to be among those to whom the noble Hadith applies: "If there comes to you one whose religion and character you approve, then marry him; otherwise, there will be tribulation on earth and widespread corruption"?

Scholars have interpreted the phrase "even if there was in him" in the Hadith as referring to a lack of wealth or inadequacy. A person's obedience to his mother in divorcing his wives for a legitimate reason is not considered a deficiency, but rather a perfection of his filial piety towards her. However, if he obeys her for an illegitimate reason, it is considered a deficiency. Obedience to parents in divorcing one's wife depends on the existence of a legitimate justification for their command. If the wife is upright and there is no legitimate reason for divorce, then obedience to them is not obligatory. It is advisable to perform the Istikhara prayer before proceeding with marriage.
