Are the visions of the prophets always a divine revelation from Allah, or can they be dreams or a mixture of dreams, like those seen by common people, especially those that describe the Lord, Blessed and Exalted be He, and cannot be interpreted literally?

The scholars have stated that the dreams of prophets are a form of revelation (wahy), and Al-Haythami reported a consensus on this matter. What further confirms this is the statement of Ubayd ibn Umayr: "The dreams of prophets are a form of revelation," using as evidence the Almighty's saying: "Indeed, I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you." It is also reported that Ibn Abbas affirmed that the dreams of prophets are a form of revelation, citing the same verse and Ismail's saying: "O my father, do as you are commanded." Al-Shafi'i also mentioned that the dreams of prophets are a form of revelation.
