The view of the majority of scholars is that paying the monetary value is not sufficient for an expiation of an oath (kaffarat al-). Rather, it is obligatory to feed or clothe ten poor persons, with an amount of 750 grams of rice or wheat for each poor person. It is not permissible to pay the expiation to fewer than ten, nor is it permissible to resort to fasting except when unable to feed or clothe. Oaths that you did not utter, or which you believed to be true at the time of swearing, do not require expiation from you.
