Is it permissible for a Muslim to refuse an invitation to a feast from relatives whom he usually sees, due to the presence of those who are psychologically harmful? And is it permissible for a sister to reduce her meetings with her brothers who neglect her and do not appreciate her presence? And is she obligated to maintain ties with them despite their neglect of her?

Answering an invitation to a wedding banquet (walimat an-nikah) is obligatory if the invitation is specific and private, not general. It is not obligatory if there are people at the banquet who would cause the invitee distress, or if the banquet is for something other than a wedding. Maintaining kinship ties (silat al-arham) is strongly emphasized in Islamic law, even if relatives fall short. However, if frequent meetings cause aversion, there is no harm in reducing their frequency while maintaining connection through other means.
