What is the ruling on and the method of dealing with a habitual drunkard's repeated entry into the mosque: Is he permitted entry in the hope of his guidance, or is he to be prevented?

Scholars have used the verse (O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying, nor while junior travelers, unless passing through, until you have bathed) to prohibit an intoxicated person from entering the mosque. They differed on whether "prayer" here refers to the act of worship, its locations, or both. An intoxicated person is prohibited from entering the mosque because they are forbidden from praying while intoxicated, and because of the inappropriate speech, harm, and disruptive behavior they cause to the mosque-goers, which contradicts Allah's command to raise His houses and purify them from defilement and idle talk. It is advised to be gentle and kind when escorting them out, to win over their hearts.
