The "Martyr of the Abdomen" (al-Mabṭūn ash-Shahīd) is one who dies from an internal illness, such as dropsy, based on the : "Whoever dies from an abdominal illness is a martyr," and "Whoever is killed by his abdomen will not be tormented in his grave." Thus, the criterion for martyrdom is that the person dies due to their abdominal illness, not merely that they were afflicted with it if they died for another reason.
