Why is the wine of the Hereafter called "wine" when it does not intoxicate?
Wine () was named such because of its fermentation, which changes its taste and smell, or because it "overpowers" (yukhamiru) the intellect. The similarity in name between worldly wine and the wine of the Hereafter does not necessitate complete agreement in all aspects. The wine of Paradise is described in the Holy Quran as being free from "laghw" (idle talk) and "ta'theem" (sin), and devoid of anything that removes the intellect or causes dispute and hatred. It is "white, a delight to those who drink, no ghoul (harm) is in it, nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom" (Quran 37:46-47), and it is mixed with what awakens and purifies the intellect.
Therefore, the similarity in names between the wine of this world and the wine of the Hereafter does not imply similarity in their realities and characteristics. Rather, the Quran explicitly states the purity of the wine of Paradise from any disturbing impurities.
