If you are hungry and come across forbidden foods, is it permissible to eat them?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is permissible for someone afflicted by severe hunger who finds no lawful food to eat from prohibited things what will sustain him, according to the Almighty's saying: "unless you are compelled to do so," and "But whoever is forced by severe hunger, without inclination to sin—then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

The person in dire necessity is permitted to eat carrion and pork and to take provisions from them. However, eating human flesh is not permissible. Eating carrion takes precedence over eating pork. Eating someone else's food takes precedence over carrion if it does not result in the cutting off of the thief's hand.

If he is in dire necessity and the owner of the food prevents him, it is permissible for him to take it by force. These rulings apply when one fears destruction for oneself, not merely ordinary hunger, and it is not a condition that one reaches the point of being on the verge of destruction.
