Is it permissible to pray at home individually, prostrating on the ground, if it is not possible to prostrate in the mosque with the congregation due to a knee illness?

You should pray in congregation at the mosque, as it is obligatory. Prostrate according to your ability, even if by gesturing (with your head). By doing so, you will not be considered as having abandoned prostration.
