The question

Is it permissible to pray at home to avoid the embarrassment caused by the questions and gazes of worshippers and the children’s insults due to a physical disability? And would one be sinful for doing so? And how can one perform Ruqyah on oneself if a reciter is unavailable?

The answer

Performing the five daily prayers in congregation is an individual obligation for able-bodied persons. The sick person is excused from attending due to the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever hears the call [to prayer] and is not prevented from following it by an excuse — they asked: 'What is the excuse, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Fear or illness' — Allah will not accept the prayer he prayed."

Illness is considered an excuse if it causes hardship and difficulty for the worshipper. It is not an excuse if it is minor and does not make attending difficult.

Among other excuses that permit skipping congregational prayer are: heavy rain, snow, strong winds, severe mud, earthquakes, extreme heat and cold, intense darkness, fear for oneself or one's property, or the presence of someone who might cause harm on the way.

If the illness causes severe hardship, there is no sin in praying at home. It is advisable to pray in congregation at home with family members, and your patience and seeking reward from Allah for the harm you endure in the mosque is better for you. It is also advised not to isolate oneself, and to seek treatment if the illness is physical, or Islamic ruqyah if it is due to evil eye or envy.
