Belief in angels is one of the six pillars of faith. They are created from light, preceding the creation of humankind. They vary in creation and stature, the greatest among them being Jibreel (Gabriel), peace be upon him, and the bearers of the Throne. Angels have wings and possess great beauty; they do not eat, drink, or tire of worshipping Allah. Their number is known only to Allah. Among their names are Jibreel (Gabriel), Mika'eel (Michael), Israfeel (Raphael), Maalik, Munkar and Nakir, Harut and Marut.

They possess great abilities, including shapeshifting and immense speed. Their functions are numerous: some are entrusted with revelation (Jibreel), with rain (Mika'eel), with the Trumpet (Israfeel), with seizing souls (the Angel of Death), with guarding the servant, with recording deeds, with the trial of the grave (Munkar and Nakir), with being the custodians of Paradise and Hellfire, with tending to the fetus in the womb, with bearing the Throne, and among them are those who roam the earth, those entrusted with mountains, those who visit the Frequented House (Al-Bayt Al-Ma'mur), and angels in rows who never cease.
