Upon whom is the absentee funeral prayer (Salat al-Gha'ib) performed, and is it performed for the martyr?

It is permissible to pray for the absent, and to pray for every Muslim who has died, according to the consensus of jurists. However, some jurists hold that the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) and the prayer for the absent (salat al-gha'ib) are not performed for a martyr, because the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not pray over the martyrs of Uhud. Some scholars, however, are of the view that it is permissible to pray over a martyr, due to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) prayer over the people of Uhud after eight years. The different opinions can be reconciled by stating that it is permissible to pray over a martyr, and it is also permissible to forgo it.
