What is the Islamic ruling on an individual who took money that does not belong to him as a result of a company paying more than the original claim in settlement of its dues?

It is permissible for someone who repairs damage to their car or similar property for less than the compensation they received to keep the excess, if the compensation was based on a settlement. However, if the agreement was to pay the difference between the value of the item before and after the damage, then it is not permissible for him to take the excess, and it must be returned to the company. In general, it is not permissible to take another's property except with their consent, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, your blood, your wealth, and your honor are sacred to you."
