The boundaries of the المدينة (Medina) are:

To the south: Jabal 'Ayir.

To the north: Jabal Thawr.

To the east: The Eastern Harrat (lava field).

To the west: The Western Harrat.

It has been stated in the noble Hadith that: "Medina is a sanctuary between 'Ayir and Thawr," and "Medina is a sanctuary between its two lava fields."
