Is growing a beard more virtuous than memorizing the Qur'an, and what should a mother do with her son who quit his job and faced family pressure because he grew his beard?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded the growing of the beard and the trimming of the mustache. This is obligatory for a Muslim unless it leads to certain harm. If growing it causes harm, it is permissible to trim it to alleviate the harm, but it is not permissible to shave it completely unless shaving is the only means to remove the harm, in accordance with the Almighty's saying: "But whoever is forced, neither desiring [it] nor transgressing, there is no sin upon him." If it is possible to find work where growing the beard does not cause harm, then what the brother did by leaving the job is correct. It is not permissible to abandon the mosque or forsake congregational prayer in obedience to one's mother or anyone else, because "there is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator." Nevertheless, one must honor and be kind to one's parents and obey them in matters that do not involve disobedience. And whoever fears Allah – He will make for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect.
