What is the ruling of Islamic law concerning an Imam who causes worshipers to lose their humility (khushu') in prayer by focusing solely on recitation without contemplation, and with an unpleasing voice?

If the Imam is proficient in recitation, knowledgeable of the rules of prayer, upright in his faith, and of good character, then it is not permissible to demand his removal. The claim that his attention to perfecting recitation is greater than his attention to contemplation is unacceptable, because contemplation is an act of the heart that only Allah knows. The loss of humility (khushu') by the worshipers in prayer is not the Imam's fault, as khushu' depends on the worshipers' own efforts. A beautiful voice should not be a criterion for choosing Imams; rather, the criterion is their establishment of prayer and their mastery of its jurisprudence. For the Imam is a guarantor of the validity of the prayer of those who follow him, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, censured preferring young individuals for imamate merely for their beautiful voices. Therefore, it is advised to be patient with the Imam and to strive to attain the means for the acceptance of prayer.
