Is it permissible for a father to favor some of his children with financial gifts due to their poverty or inability to work?

Some scholars have permitted favoring some children over others if there is a legitimate Shariah reason, such as one of them being disabled, or having a large family, or being preoccupied with seeking knowledge. Or, withholding a gift from some of them due to their wickedness or innovation (bid'ah), because there are texts that permit this in the context of waqf (endowment) and gifts.
