What is the interpretation of the verse: "And know that Allah comes in between a person and his heart"?

Interpretations of the noble verse vary. Some indicate that Allah intervenes between the disbeliever and faith, and between the believer and disbelief; or between the disbeliever and obedience to Allah, and between the believer and disobedience to Him. Abu Ja'far al-Tabari mentioned that Allah has full control over the hearts of His servants and intervenes between them and their hearts whenever He wills, so no one with a heart can comprehend anything except by His permission and will.
