Are the three mentioned pronouncements of divorce counted as one pronouncement or three?

The majority of scholars hold that a divorce pronounced with the phrase "three divorces" counts as three divorces, and that a revocable divorcee can be divorced again during her waiting period ('iddah), even if the pronouncement is repeated in a single session. However, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah is of the opinion that pronouncing "three divorces" or sequential divorces without a return (to the marital relationship) or a new marriage contract counts as a single divorce. The fatwa (religious edict) is based on the opinion of the majority, meaning that the wife has been divorced three times and has become irrevocably separated (baynunah kubra). She is not permissible for her husband unless she marries someone else, he consummates the marriage with her, and then he separates from her and her waiting period concludes.
