Does a triple divorce count as a single divorce, and what is the Islamic ruling on it when there was a previous official divorce?

The majority of scholars hold that a divorce pronounced three times (in one utterance) counts as three divorces, rendering the wife irrevocably divorced (bainunah kubra). She does not become lawful for her husband again until she marries another man, he consummates the marriage with her, then he divorces her, and her waiting period (iddah) concludes.

However, according to the view of Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, it counts as a single divorce. If the husband has not previously divorced her, he may take her back before the expiration of her waiting period.

Divorcing three times at once or before remarriage is contrary to the Sunnah.

It is preferable to present such matters to the Sharia court or to trustworthy scholars.
