Is it obligatory to sell the house and car acquired with ill-gotten money and donate their price, or has Allah forgiven what is past?

Scholars differ on the ruling concerning wealth acquired from unlawful work after repenting from it. Some are of the view that it is obligatory to dispose of it by giving it to the poor and needy. Others believe that it is not obligatory to dispose of it if the person who acquired it was ignorant of its unlawfulness. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah holds that whoever acquires wealth from unlawful work and then repents, “has what has passed,” and is not obliged to dispose of any of it, citing the verse: {So whoever receives an admonition from his Lord and desists, then he shall have what has passed, and his affair is committed to Allah} [Al-Baqarah: 275]. Based on this view, there is no harm for you in benefiting from the house and the car, and you are not obliged to donate their value, especially given your need.
