Intentionally swearing a false oath is an oath of immersion ( al-Ghamus), and it is one of the major sins, the sinfulness of which increases in . Its expiation, according to the majority of scholars, is sincere repentance ( Nasuh) and seeking forgiveness. However, the Shafi'is hold that an expiation for an oath is obligatory (feeding ten poor people, or clothing them, or freeing a slave, or fasting three days if one cannot find the former). Fasting is not invalidated by sins that are unrelated to the desires of the stomach and the private parts; rather, these sins affect the reward of the fasting person. Sincere repentance expiates all sins.
