Does my asking my fiancée about the authenticity of the sexual conversations—which she admitted to—that took place between her and a former young man constitute slandering a chaste woman? And is the illness that befell me a punishment for that, or is it a trial from Allah?

If the suitor mentions to the girl what transpired between her and a previous young man, this is not a slander (qadhf) that necessitates the legal punishment (hadd), nor is it an injustice to her. However, his inquiry about her past is a clear mistake, for she should have repented and concealed herself; due to the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "All of my Ummah will be forgiven except those who commit sins openly." And whoever wishes to propose to a girl should inquire about her from trustworthy people. Illness may be a trial by which Allah raises one's ranks, and it is not necessarily due to a sin.
