What is the grade of the Hadith: "Do not kill locusts, for they are from the greatest army of Allah," and how can it be reconciled with the permissibility of eating locusts if it is authentic?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The prohibition against killing locusts is established because they are from the greatest armies of Allah. Scholars have deduced from this prohibition the impermissibility of killing them wantonly and destructively on earth. This does not contradict the permissibility of eating them and benefiting from their meat for the Ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon him), as established in hadiths. However, if harm and corruption from locusts are realized, the majority of jurists hold that killing them is permissible, from the perspective of repelling an aggressor and preserving respected property.
