Is appearance important when choosing a life partner, even if he is a smoker?

The most important things a woman should consider in a suitor are his religion and his character, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "If someone whose religion and character you approve of proposes to you, then marry him [to your daughter]." If he loves her, he will honor her; and if he dislikes her, he will not oppress her. It is also important for there to be other desirable qualities, such as physical attractiveness. The Prophet (peace be upon him) legislated looking at the woman one intends to marry to foster affection and good companionship, and it is also recommended for the woman to look at the suitor for the same purpose. Religion should be given precedence over other matters. As for marrying a smoker, please refer to Fatwa no. 5742.
