How can I atone for my sins, and what should I do about not fulfilling my promise to Allah?

The greatest cause for the forgiveness of sins is repentance to Allah Almighty, for His mercy is vast, and His pardon is not overwhelmed by any sin. Sincere repentance ( Nasuh) includes abandoning the sin, regretting it, resolving not to return to it, and restoring rights. As for a promise to Allah: if it was a vow of obedience, then fulfilling it is obligatory. If you are unable to, then an expiation for breaking an oath is required. However, if it was merely a promise, then fulfilling it is recommended, but nothing is incurred if it is not fulfilled.
