What is the method for using the hand for adhkar (remembrance of Allah), and should tasbih (glorification of Allah) be done by counting on the joints of the fingers only, or is it permissible to count on three sections of the fingers, and were both methods narrated from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace?

Counting tasbih on the fingers is a sunnah (definition), both in word and deed, of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He commanded his wives to count takbir (Allahu Akbar), taqdis (Subhan al-Malik al-Quddus), and tahlil (La ilaha illallah) on their fingertips, and he himself was seen counting tasbih on his hand. The method of using the fingers is broad, as no text has been reported specifying whether he counted one tasbih per finger or three tasbihs per joint. Whichever method a person uses is sufficient.
