What is meant by manna and quails (al-mann and al-salwa)?

There is disagreement regarding the intended meaning of al-mann (manna) and al-salwa (quail) that Allah sent down to the Children of Israel. It was said: al-mann is a dew that descends from the sky onto trees or rocks and is sweet like honey. And it was said: it is honey. And it was said: it is a sweet drink. And it was said: it is a source that encompasses everything Allah bestowed without effort, and this is supported by the fact that truffles (al-kam'ah) are considered part of al-mann. As for al-salwa: it was said that it is a bird resembling a quail, or it is the quail itself. And it was said: it is honey.
