The reasons for the jurists' disagreements are numerous, among them: the conflict of legal evidences and the varying methods of preferring or reconciling them; linguistic differences in interpreting ambiguous or general terms; disagreement on the extent to which some general evidences, such as the practice of the people of Medina, are to be considered; variations in the breadth of knowledge and the strength of understanding texts; disagreement on the authentication or weakening of hadiths, or on stipulating specific conditions for a solitary report; and disagreement on the usuli (juristic-legal theoretical) principles, such as the persistence of generality and unrestrictedness, or their susceptibility to specification and restriction.
