Nothing has been authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, regarding the meanings of the disconnected letters (al-Huroof al-Muqatta'ah). For this reason, exegetes have differed concerning them. The most preponderant opinion is that they are among the manifestations of the Qur'an's inimitability, and that Allah alone possesses knowledge of their intended meaning. Thus, they are part of the mutashabih (ambiguous verses) referred to in His statement: "And no one knows its interpretation except Allah."
