What is the method of repentance for taking bribes (money and gifts)? And what should actually be done with the money and gifts taken? Is it permissible to donate them if it is impossible to return them to their owners, while giving the monetary value of the gifts in cash? Is it permissible to use this money to marry off needy young men or to start projects for them?

The act of bribery is forbidden and is a major sin, and its perpetrator is cursed. Whoever repents from bribery must desist from it, regret it, and resolve not to return to it. If the person who paid the bribe intended thereby to obtain a right of theirs, the money must be returned to them. However, if they paid it to obtain something to which they had no right, it should not be returned to them. The repentant person should dispose of it by spending it on the poor or on public welfare. If it is impossible to reach the owner of the money that must be returned, it should be given as charity on their behalf. If taking the bribe resulted in the loss of someone's right, that right must be restored to them or their forgiveness sought, because if a sin relates to the rights of people, repentance from it is not complete except by doing so.
