What is the ruling on money acquired from a profession that was in exchange for a bribe, given that its owner now regrets it and could not find any other means of work?

Islam prohibits bribery to safeguard the interests of society. The Quran states: "(And do not consume your properties among yourselves wrongfully, nor hand them over to the authorities to consume a portion of the properties of others sinfully while you know)." And it has been narrated that "Allah has cursed the briber, the bribed, and the mediator." If a person obtains a job through bribery and is not more deserving of it or is incompetent, then this is impermissible. However, if the work is rightfully his and he can perform it efficiently, but he could not access it except through bribery, then scholars consider this permissible, and the sin remains upon the one who takes the bribe. As for giving a bribe to obtain a right or to repel an injustice, this does not fall under the threat of punishment. As long as the work is lawful and performed with proficiency, the earnings are permissible.
