What should I do about my wife's refusal to wear an outer garment over trousers, and her insistence that she is not convinced of its impermissibility, especially since she did not wear it before marriage? Should I be patient with her, or should I insist on my opinion even if it leads to divorce?

The hijab is a religious obligation upon women, and its obligation is further emphasized by the husband's command, as it is obedience in what is right. It is not permissible for a woman to wear trousers and go out in them due to their failure to meet the specifications of the Sharia-compliant hijab. The husband must compel his wife to wear the hijab by virtue of his guardianship. Allah Almighty says: "O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire," and He says: "Men are in charge of women." The wife's refusal to wear the hijab is not a valid excuse in Sharia. It is recommended to be patient with her, supplicate for her, and involve wise people for reconciliation. If these means are not effective, then divorcing her is recommended, and it may even become obligatory if she neglects the obligatory rights of Allah.
