Men and women differ in nature and roles. Men are tasked with striving and going out to earn a livelihood, while it is preferred for women to remain in their homes. If a woman does go out, she must lower her gaze from men. A man's face is not considered awrah for a woman, unlike a woman's face for a man. Looking at a man's face is permissible for a woman if she does not intend pleasure or fear fitnah, similar to a man looking at the face of a beardless youth. This is supported by the continued practice of women going out veiled to mosques and markets, whereas men were not commanded to veil.
