Is it permissible to associate with relatives who commit sins, especially if shunning them necessitates shunning those who do not deserve to be shunned, by analogy with dealing with unbelieving parents?
Abandoning prayer is one of the gravest sins. It has been said that one who abandons it is a disbeliever. Shunning one who abandons or is negligent in prayer is religiously mandated if a benefit is realized from the shunning. If there is no benefit in shunning, then continue to communicate with them, reminding them of the seriousness of abandoning prayer and inviting them to adhere to it. As for those among family and brethren who do not deserve to be shunned, it is not legislated to shun them due to the presence of some transgressors among them, because shunning is a severance of kinship ties, and averting harm takes precedence over achieving a benefit.
