Is it recommended for a person to prepare their shroud before their death, or not?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Preparation for death is a religious requirement and is achieved by increasing good deeds and freeing oneself from the rights of other people. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Increase your remembrance of the destroyer of pleasures" – meaning death. As for preparing the shroud before death, it is not recommended, but it is permissible, and some Companions did it, such as the story of the man who asked for the Prophet's burdah (cloak) to be his shroud. Similarly, preparing the grave is permissible. This indicates the permissibility of preparing something before it is needed, and that the best thing one can do in life is to prepare for the return (to Allah).
