The revelation began with a righteous dream, then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was made to love seclusion in the Cave of Hira. The angel Gabriel came to him and said, "Read!" The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, replied, "I am not a reader." Gabriel repeated the command three times, and each time the Prophet gave the same answer, until Gabriel said, "Read in the name of your Lord who created."

His saying, peace and blessings be upon him, "I am not a reader," was because he did not know how to read or write, and nothing had been dictated to him yet. Gabriel, peace be upon him, repeated the command to read as a preparation for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to receive the Qur'an. So, the meaning of "Read!" is: repeat and say what will be dictated to you.
